PCK promotes the self-sufficiency of low-income women and men by preparing them to work in commercial kitchens. During this 14-week program, students get nearly 500 hours of experience through classroom learning and internships at restaurants including Moshulu, Earth Bread + Brewery and Pod.

As Chef Instructor for PCK, Chef Hugo will oversee the students as they facilitate ServSafe food safety and sanitation curriculum, learn kitchen and culinary skills and prepare meals for shelters and emergency kitchens, while mentoring the students through respect, trust and support.

Growing up in a suburb of Los Angeles where drugs and gangs were prevalent, Chef Hugo found an alternative avenue through the culinary industry at a young age. Today Chef Hugo lends his years of experience to provide culinary training to others who may be looking for alternative life paths.

“I am both honored and excited to serve as the new Chef Instructor for Philabundance Community Kitchen, a Philabundance program with an 81 percent job placement rate in the food service industry. PCK is more than just cooking in the kitchen; it’s about teaching both culinary and life skills for those who are in need of a new life direction.”

Chef Hugo has an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from the California School of Culinary Arts. He comes to PCK from Farestart, an adult culinary program in Seattle that provides a real solution to homelessness, poverty and hunger. There, he held the positions of Adult Chef Trainer, Sous Chef and Adult Training Supervisor. Born in El Salvador, Chef Hugo currently resides in South Philadelphia with his fiancé, Katie.
